Driving Cautiously in the Rain
Good drivers need to be cautious at all times whether they are doing their daily drive or on their vacation. The rain can be very deadly for those on road and it is therefore very important drivers keep safe during the rain. Heavy rain especially can reduce visibility as well as create slippery and hazardous road conditions. It is even worse at night. Below are a few ways of making sure of keeping safe.
Drivers are advised to both their hands on the steering wheel at all times and avoid using cell phones and if possible do not turn on the radio. The headlights should also be on even when it is in broad daylight. Drivers should also keep a sizable distance from the car in front of them because one never knows what the driver in front of you intends to do and could affect you. The speed limit should be at a low level such that he driver can see far enough in front to be able to make appropriate decisions when driving.
Drivers are also better off avoiding flooded roads. Unless you do not have any other choice, drivers should completely avoid driving through stagnant or flowing water. Drivers can alternatively judge the depth of the water by monitoring another driver who might be in front of you. In case the vehicle is on top of water and has little contact with the ground, the driver should ease off the gas and steer straight or slightly on the flowing direction.
This is because the engine can stall when it is flooded with water. Always turn on the defroster immediately the windshield begins to fog. This is meant to clear the inside of the windshield so that the driver has a clear view of what is in front. In cases where the roads have potholes or pools of water drivers are supposed to be aware of splashes from oncoming vehicles. Stay calm and remain in your lane.
Drivers should also beware that brakes become weak driving through deep water hence the need to step on the pedals a little more lightly. Drivers are also advised to change their windshield wipers immediately they start showing signs of ineffectiveness. In cases where the rain is pouring too much and the driver is having difficulties seeing what is in front it is better to pull off the road and wait for the rain to calm down.
